After the conclusion of the Test series, the Indians are now playing South Africa in the six-match Test series. While the hosts had an advantage in Tests it is a pretty even scenario in white-ball cricket. The first ODI of the series is being played at the Wanderers in Durban and the Proteas aren’t in a position they would’ve liked after the Indian bowlers kept them quite and chipped in with wickets at regular intervals. But not everything went Virat Kohli’s way as he called for a bizarre referral.

After winning the toss, the South African captain elected to bat first. India got Ajinkya Rahane back into the team at No.4. There was nothing on offer from the surface and the hosts opened with caution. Both Quinton de Kock and Hashim Amla didn’t give Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Jasprit Bumrah a chance. But in the 8th over Amla was beaten by Bumrah and hit in front of the stumps to be lbw.

They lost another four wickets by the 35th over and weren’t really in a position to impose anything on the Indians. In the 36th over of the South African innings, Bumrah attempted a yorker and ended up spraying it down the leg side. Dhoni guarded it behind the wickets and while both the bowler and keeper weren’t interested in an appeal Kohli looked very excited and came running across the pitch appealing.

Rohit Sharma also heard something and convinced him to take the review. MS Dhoni who is often considered a maestro with the DRS calls also remained silent and disinterested. But Virat who always runs on instinct decided to take the review and replays suggested that the ball was nowhere near the bat; eventually, it was a referral in vain.

Twitterati enjoyed another moment when they could prove that Kohli needs to rely on Dhoni for the DRS calls and not go by his own instinct as the veteran gets it right more often than not.

Here is how Twitter reacted to Kohli’s review:
