Virat Kohli practises batting at the end of Day 4’s play after golden duck in the first innings of the Nottingham Test
James Anderson dismissed him in the first innings.
India are in a strong position going into the fifth day’s play of their opening Test against England at Trent Bridge in Nottingham. The visitors need 157 runs to win the game and take a 1-0 lead in the high-profile five-match Test series. However, Virat Kohli, the Indian skipper, hasn’t quite had the best of times from the personal front in the ongoing red-ball match.
In the first innings, the 32-year-old failed to open his account as James Anderson got rid of him for a golden duck. He came to bat after Rohit Sharma and Cheteshwar Pujara got out in quick succession. However, Anderson churned out a peach of the delivery to send him packing. It also happened to be his second consecutive duck on English soil in the purest format of the game.
Back in 2018, Stuart Broad had gotten him out for a duck in the second innings of the final Test at the Kennington Oval in London. In the meantime, Kohli is gearing up for the fifth day’s play of the current Test. India have already lost KL Rahul to Broad and the fall of another wicket will bring Kohli in. Hence, the Indian captain will be in with a lot of responsibility.
Prior to his batting, the Delhi-born is preparing hard to improve his batting. After the end of the fourth day’s play on Saturday, Virat was seen practising batting. Kohli hasn’t quite been at his very best with the bat in the last two years and he’ll be looking to make amends.
Virat Kohli surpasses MS Dhoni
After the duck in the first innings, Kohli also surpassed MS Dhoni’s tally of most ducks by an Indian skipper in Test cricket. Even as Dhoni held the dubious record, having scored eight ducks, Virat has toppled him to nine. Overall, Kohli has gotten 13 ducks in Test cricket with five being golden ducks.
It was also the sixth time when Anderson dismissed Kohli in Test cricket. Back in 2014, the speedster accounted for Virat’s wicket four times. For the time being, it remains to be seen if Virat can get big runs on the fifth day of the Nottingham Test.
