Time and again, one has seen cricketers saying that they try to maintain a safe distance from social media and negative criticism in order to stay in a healthy state of mind. But it looks like Indian superstar and arguably the most popular cricketer in the world, Virat Kohli is an exception. The India skipper ‘reads everything on Twitter’, according to his Royal Challengers Bangalore teammate Adam Zampa.
The Australia spinner shared the dressing room with Kohli for the very first time in his career thanks to IPL. Zampa was a part of the RCB squad for the recently-concluded IPL 2020 in the UAE. And while Zampa is now good friends with Kohli, it was not always like this. In 2016, he had taken a sly dig at the India star before the latter made the spinner regret it.
Virat Kohli reads everything: Adam Zampa
Adam Zampa recalled how he took the dig at Kohli back in 2016. A newcomer in international cricket at that stage, Zampa had queried Kane Richardson about two cricketers in his post on Twitter. The players in that post were Kohli and AB de Villiers. Interestingly, Zampa hadn’t even tagged or mentioned Kohli in his tweet but it didn’t stop the latter from knowing about it.
“I replied, typical, just taking the piss, ‘Who are they, mate?” Adam Zampa told Sydney Morning Herald. “The Indian fans did not let me live it down. Virat had obviously seen it.
“I played my debut, bowled an over to him, the last ball of the over he smacked it for four, came down to me and said, ‘Stay a long way from Twitter, mate’. I was like, ‘Geezers, this bloke reads everything on Twitter’. He went on to get 120 (108*) that day. I stoked the fire,” he added.
Zampa was speaking about the IPL game between RCB and now-defunct Rising Pune Supergiant. It was his first season in the IPL. Kohli had gone on to score a stunning century to help RCB chase down 192. Zampa’s second stint in the IPL came this year. He was initially not a part of the tournament but later replaced Kane Richardson in the RCB squad.
