Team India has been enjoying tremendous success under Virat Kohli’s captaincy. Though the Men in Blue have been able to put up top-notch performances on a consistent basis there are still question whether he is an able successor to MS Dhoni or not and Kohli himself decided to talk about it.
During his appearance on a talk show recently, he further clarified that it has been his understanding with the former captain that has helped the transition come through in a successful manner. In fact, the team or he himself never felt that there was a transition since Dhoni decided to be around and help the team through this phase.
While speaking to his close friend Gaurav Kapur on the Breakfast with Champions show, Virat said, “The transition went pretty well. No one felt there’s a problem. Even on the field, no one realized that there has been a transition.”
We crack jokes
“We still crack jokes and have a good laugh in between just like we did before. So, I feel really lucky that he’s still around during my initial years of captaincy and I’m still learning things from him,” he added.
He also said that Dhoni, who is also known as ‘Captain Cool’ for his ice-cool approach in tense situations during matches, isn’t a serious person as he seems on the field and has a laugh or two even during the matches.
While talking about their mutual understanding, Kohli said, “MS and I have a great understanding. For example, if we’re running between the wickets and he says two, I simply close my eyes and run. Because I’m so sure of his judgment, I know that I’ll make it.”
Best cricketing brain
“I don’t think I’ve come across a better cricketing brain just in terms of planning; knowing what’s happening in the game and can be done… Sometimes I like to follow my own instinct as well but if I ask him something eight or nine times out of 10, he tells you things that always work. So it’s a blessing to have him,” Kohli remarked while lauding Dhoni the tactician.
In recent series, it was observed that Dhoni would set the field in the fag end of the innings while the designated skipper would guard the boundary ropes. This mutual respect and understanding between these two important cogs of Indian team is a prime reason for the team’s recent success.
