He recently was named as the first cricketer to reach the count of 100 million followers in May this year and is already ahead of the likes of Sachin Tendulkar, MS Dhoni, and Rohit Sharma, when it comes to fandom on digital space.
At that time, Kohli had 29.4 million followers on Twitter, 37.1 million on Facebook and 33.6 million on Instagram, making him India’s most followed sportsperson on social media. Portugal footballer Cristiano Ronaldo is the most followed sportsperson on social media with around 366 million followers with 122 million on Facebook, 77.8 million on Twitter and 166 million on Instagram. Following him was his contemporary great Lionel Messi doesn’t have a Twitter handle but has 119 million followers on Instagram and 89 million on Facebook.
Kohli thanks fans on reaching 30 million Twitter followers
Many would assume that Sachin Tendulkar might be the most followed Indian sports personality on Twitter, but in May 2018, it was revealed that the Bharat Ratna honoured cricketer has 28 million followers on Twitter, 29 million followers on Facebook and 14.7 million on Instagram. Meanwhile, Virat Kohli has surpassed the 30 million follower mark on Twitter and took time out to thank his fans.
Kohli posted a reaction video of him gawking at the six hit by MS Dhoni in the game against Australia and captioned the video as “also my reaction when we crossed 30 million on Twitter. ???? Thanks for all the love and support everyone. ???????????? #30MillionStrong ????”
Meanwhile, Virat Kohli is leading India amazingly well in the ICC World Cup 2019, as India is yet to lose a match out of four played, so far as they have won against South Africa, Australia and most recently Pakistan, while their match against New Zealand was washed away. Kohli himself has been amongst runs with scores of 82 against Australia and 77 versus Pakistan.
Team India now has a relatively long break, as they next face Afghanistan on June 22 in Southampton. They will, however, do so without the services of their opener, left-hander Shikhar Dhawan, who has been confirmed to being ruled out of the entire tournament due to his fractured left thumb sustained in the match against Australia. Rishabh Pant has been named as his replacement, who is in England as a cover for him.
