Come Thursday, the much-anticipated flagship Ice cricket tournament will kick-off in the Swiss Alps, comprising two days of festivities and extravaganza. Also, the longstanding India-Pakistan rivalry between Virender Sehwag and Shahid Afridi will be renewed as they battle it out on an ice field rather than a regular cricket ground.

The two teams that will compete in the tournament are- Royals & Badrutt’s. While the Royals will be led by Afridi, it is Sehwag who has been bestowed with the captaincy reigns of the Diamonds. The former Indian opener will play alongside his one time teammates Zaheer Khan, Mohammed Kaif, and Ajit Agarkar. The team also comprises of Sri Lankan stalwarts Mahela Jayawardene, Tillakaratne Dilshan and Lasith Malinga while Australia’s Michael Hussey and Andrew Symonds are also part of the team.

Afridi looks all prepped up for this unique challenge and is ready to take on Virender Sehwag’s XI in the upcoming ice cricket match. Taking to his Twitter handle the 37-year-old Pakistani wrote, “It has been a while since getting an interesting challenge. But this February 8 and February 9 is going to be interesting. The two-day event will take place against the serene and breath-taking backdrop of the Swiss mountains which will host two matches in two days. The lake freezes into an extremely thick layer of ice, enabling the lake to withstand more than 200 tons of weight, thereby providing the apt conditions to construct pavilion and grandstands to watch and support the festivities.

The pitch that has been laid out for the tournament consists of a state of the art artificial turf carpet spread out on the snowfield in St. Moritz, a high Alpine resort in the Engadine.
