A few days after former Australia skipper Michael Clarke was bestowed with the honor of being given life membership with the Marylebone Cricket Club, he is joined by Virender Sehwag, the former Indian opener who gave swagger a new meaning while he occupied the Indian opening batting slot in his illustrious career.
Sehwag’s career kicked off early in 2000 when he made his mark in the Test side alongside Sachin Tendulkar. It was at this point where he began to be compared to Tendulkar. Since then, the 37-year-old enjoyed a stellar career in which he played 104 Test matches, 251 One-Day Internationals, and 19 T20 Internationals.
Virender Sehwag is perhaps one of the best openers to have ever been produced by India and also has been one of India’s most prolific run-getters in almost all formats of the game. A destructive opening batsman, Sehwag scored 8,586 Test runs at an average of 49.34, and 8273 One-Day International runs at an average of 35.05.

Sehwag’s love affair with the MCC dates back to 2013 where he captained the MCC in a List ‘A’ match against one of England’s more prominent sides – Yorkshire. He also was a part of the Bicentenary match that took place at Lord’s between the MCC and the Rest of the World. The match saw the likes of Sachin Tendulkar, Kevin Pietersen, Shane Warne, and Yuvraj Singh participate in the encounter. However, for India, he has played just once at the spiritual home of cricket against England all those years ago in 2002. Since his retirement, he has been very active on Twitter apart from having an academy.
John Stephenson, MCC Head of Cricket, said: “It is always a pleasure to welcome new Honorary Life Members to the Club, and Virender is no exception. He was a wonderfully entertaining player throughout his career and has also represented MCC with aplomb in the past, so is fully deserving of this honour.”
