Virender Sehwag celebrates Chris Gayle after his superhuman batting in England ODIs
Gayle slammed 39 sixes in the ODI series which is the highest by a batsman in any series or tournament.
Windies came up with yet another blazing performance against England, a team ranked higher than them in all forms of the game, in the fifth and final ODI of the series at home to square it 2-2. Opening batsman Chris Gayle came up with another swashbuckling knock of 77 runs in just 27 balls in the final game and won the man of the series award. He hit two hundreds in the series though the Caribbeans lost on both those occasions. In the fifth game in Gros Islet, the Jamaican ensured that he completed the job in his team’s favour.
Rattled by pacer Oshane Thomas’ maiden five-wicket burst in international cricket, England were all out for just 113 and the hosts took less than 13 overs to seal the match with 7 wickets in hand, thanks to yet another ‘Gaylestorm’. The 39-year-old southpaw hit the fastest-ever ODI half century by a West Indian, surpassing Darren Sammy’s 20-ball fifty scored against South Africa almost a decade back in 2010. Gayle scored 135 and 162 in the first and fourth ODIs to power the Windies to 350-plus totals though they ended the second-best on both occasions.
Former India opener Virender Sehwag came out praising the Caribbean who recently thought of reconsidering his decision to quit after the upcoming World Cup in England. Supporting Gayle’s tag as “Universe Boss”, Sehwag also called him an “entertainer” in a tweet.
Gayle hit 39 sixes in the series
Gayle slammed 39 sixes in the ODI series which is the highest by a batsman in any series or tournament. He also scored 424 runs in the series which is also a record by a batsman who has played in four or fewer innings and completed 10,000 runs in the 50-over format as only the second West Indian after Brian Lara. The man also has 500 sixes to his cricket in international cricket.
Gayle also cracked a joke on his own age while receiving the man of the series award. “Man of the Series at age 39, come on youngsters what’s happening (laughs). It’s a fantastic series. To be able to tie the series 2-2, both teams played well. Today our bowlers were fantastic,” he said.
The third match in Grenada was washed out because of rain.
