Simon Taufel is arguably one of the best umpires in the history of cricket. He umpired in many big games throughout his career and was a familiar face officiating the games back 2000s. The 48-year-old signed off from the job back in 2012 after serving for more than a decade as a match official. In a recent interview, he was asked about facts related to his umpiring journey to which he came up with some brilliant answers.

The 48-year-old made his first appearance as an umpire back in 1999 in an ODIs followed by his debut in Tests in the year 2000. He was known for his accuracy and the Australian was rewarded by the International cricket council for the same. Simon Taufel won ICC umpire of the year five times in a row from 2004 till 2008. In his decade-long career, Taufel umpired in 74 Tests, 174 ODIs and 34 T20Is. After bidding farewell to international cricket, he turned into a writer and wrote a book that was named as ‘Finding the Gaps’.

Simon Taufel was involved in a rapid-fire round

Recently he was involved in a rapid-fire round with ESPNCricinfo. Meanwhile, he was asked some tough questions and to which he answered diligently. Taufel was asked about the most disciplined cricketer that he had come across in his umpiring career. He took the name of the former Australian skipper Mark Waugh and former Indian cricketer Rahul Dravid.

The 48-year-old has umpired in many matches of India and Taufel was questioned if he could remember any Hindi words. He funnily responded saying that he picked a couple of words that were ‘Bas- Bas’ and ‘Thoda-Thoda’. During the rapid-fire, Taufel was also asked to take the names of three players that were quite dangerous to be facing as an umpire.

He had no second thoughts in his mind while picking the batsmen as he took the name of West Indian opener Chris Gayle, former Indian opener Virender Sehwag and current Aussie opener David Warner.  The answer was quite genuine as the trio is known for their hitting skills across the globe. Even they are also listed as some other best clean hitting batsmen in the history of cricket.
