India played the first ODI of the three-match series yesterday at Trent Bridge in Nottingham and comprehensively won by eight wickets. Virat Kohli won the toss and elected to field first, but the Brits piled on their agony with a quick-fire partnership of 73 runs from 10.2 overs. To the Men in Blue’s relief, Kuldeep Yadav nipped out Jason Roy to draw first blood.

Joe Root and Johnny Bairstow also perished soon to the chinaman bowler. Jos Buttler and Ben Stokes put forth a stand of 93 runs to bring the Poms back into the match. Kuldeep again came to India’s rescue and nipped out Buttler just when the batsman looked ominous to take the match away from the visiting team. The spinner then churned out Stokes’ wicket to pick up a five-wicket haul.

The 23-year old got rid of David Willey in his last over to become the first left-arm spinner with a six-for in ODIs. He also surpassed Pakistani leg-spinner Shahid Afridi as the spinner with the best bowling figures in ODIs in England. The hosts could only manage 268 runs and were bowled out one ball short of the 50 overs. During the run-chase, Shikhar Dhawan blazed away, however, Moeen Ali got rid of him.

The one-sided run-chase

Rohit Sharma looked cool as a cucumber and never allowed the pressure to get on to his nerves. He notched his 18th ODI ton and also made sure that he stayed till the very end to see his team through to the thumping victory. Virat Kohli also chipped in with 75 runs.

Virender Sehwag, the former Indian cricketer, was awestruck by the jaw-dropping show and he congratulated Rohit, Kuldeep and the national team on their triumph.

He took to Twitter and wrote, “Sharma ji ka ladka hit tha, hit hai, hit rahega. Effortless strokeplay from Rohit and a wonderful innings. Kuldeep Yadav too much to handle for England. Two outstanding individual performances and great support from the rest, well deserved victory #ENGvIND”
