Virender Sehwag, Harbhajan Singh, Suresh Raina stop shooting to protest Pulwama attack

The Indian cricketing fraternity continues to show the way for the rest of the country with some exemplary gestures in the wake of the dastardly attack in Kashmir’s Pulwama district. In one of the worst attacks on the Indian security forces, at least 44 CRPF personnel lost their lives on Thursday after an SUV loaded with explosives rammed into a truck carrying the soldiers.

Ever since the heart-wrenching incident took place, the condolence messages have been pouring in for the family of the martyred CRPF soldiers. The world is condemning the attack from Pakistan-based Islamist militant group Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM). And cricketers, past and present, have also made sure to do their bit. From condemning the attack, paying tribute to the martyrs and provide help to the affected families, the cricketers are doing all they can.

In the latest turn of events, Virender Sehwag, Harbhajan Singh and Suresh Raina voluntarily stopped shooting of a commercial for two hours on Sunday to express their protest against the ghastly attack. The commercial was Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan‘s next big project featuring Indian cricketers. In the wake of the attack, 24 film associations had staged a protest at Filmcity in Goregaon. The cricketing trio was also attending the shooting but made sure to make their feelings clear to show their solidarity with the families of the martyrs.

“Whatever we say or do will perhaps be less for the soldiers and their daily. We can only thank them and should do whatever can to help them. We are pained but are hopeful for a better time for all of us in the future,” Sehwag said as quoted by NDTV.

On the other hand, Harbhajan said he hopes the sacrifice of the martyred soldiers does not go in vain. “These are tough times but let’s stay united so that they aren’t able to break us. I’m grateful to all the soldiers who protect us around the clock. Cricketers, actors aren’t heroes. The real hero of the nation is our soldier,” Harbhajan said.

Cricket against Pakistan

The cricketing bodies have also started showing their protest against Pakistan. On Saturday, the prestigious Cricket Club of India had covered the portrait of former Pakistan captain Imran Khan while on Sunday the PCA stadium in Mohali removed all the photos of the Pakistani cricketers.

Suresh Bafna, the secretary of CCI, has also said that India should boycott Pakistan in the upcoming ICC World Cup.
