Former Indian cricketer Virender Sehwag made it clear that he has no interest in politics and won’t be running in the Lok Sabha elections. For the second consecutive time, former Indian opening batsman Virender Sehwag has been rumoured to be taking part in politics. Speculations suggested that he would run in the elections for the Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) from Rohtak in Haryana.
Besides Sehwag, other cricketers have also been speculated to be contesting in the upcoming elections through a BJP ticket. Gautam Gambhir, who was conferred with the Padma Shri recently, has been in the news for his interest in politics. Reports stated that he might get a BJP ticket to run in the Lok Sabha elections from Delhi. Similar reports suggested former Indian captain, MS Dhoni, to be running for BJP from Jharkhand.
As of now the only Indian cricketer in the current Lok Sabha, representing BJP is the former India all-rounder Kirti Azad. He won from the Darbhanga constituency in Bihar for the third time in 2014. Amongst other major celebrities, Madhuri Dixit was rumoured to join politics and contest in the elections for the BJP. The actress denied any interest in politics or any will to run in the elections. There’s a possibility that Kareena Kapoor might represent the Congress while contesting in the Lok Sabha elections of 2019.
Sehwag tweets to rubbish rumours
It wasn’t the first time that a rumour of this nature had spread like an epidemic. Something similar happened in 2014 ahead of the elections. This time, apparently a senior BJP member was given the task to convince Sehwag into running. “Party has already decided on Sehwag. It is now up to the cricketer to give his consent. The leader who has been assigned the job is quite active in NCR and Delhi politics,” a party leader was quoted as saying.
In response to the reports suggesting Sehwag’s interest in running in politics, he tweeted: “Some things never change, like this Rumour. Same in 2014, and no innovation even in Rumour in 2019. Not interested then, not interested now. #BaatKhatam #5YearChallenge”
Clearly, it can be concluded that the former power-hitter of Indian Cricket has no interest in politics.
