It was a disappointing start to India’s tour of Australia on Wednesday as the visitors lost the first T20I of the three-match series by a narrow margin at the Gabba in Brisbane. India were given a target of 174 in 17 overs in the rain-curtailed game but Virat Kohli’s men ended up in 169 for 7 in the allotted overs. The two teams will be playing their next match in Melbourne on Friday.

Kohli won the toss and put Australia into bat. Powered by Glenn Maxwell’s 24-ball 46, Chris Lynn’s 20-ball 37 and Marcus Stoinis’ 19-ball 33, the hosts scored 158 for 4 in 17 overs when rain intervened. Kuldeep Yadav was the best Indian bowler with 2 wickets for 24 runs. India were asked to chase 174 in 17 overs as per the Duckworth-Lewis Stern Method.

They lost two of their premier batsmen – Rohit Sharma (7) and skipper Kohli (4) cheaply. Test discard Shikhar Dhawan scored 76 off 42 balls while Dinesh Karthik belted 30 off 13 but yet it was not enough for India to cross the line. Australian spinner Adam Zampa took two wickets for 22 to be picked as man of the match.

Sehwag’s funny take on India’s loss

Indian fans were heartbroken with the loss at the very beginning of the series but former Indian opener Virender Sehwag was at his humorous best when reacting to India’s loss. In a tweet, the 40-year-old said India lost the match despite scoring more than Australia, adding that the “GST” which was added to Australia’s score proved to be costly for India at the end.

He nevertheless hailed the way the high-profile series started off, with a “thrilling game”. The tweet received almost 7.5k likes.

India will play a four-Test series following the T20I matches and then a three-match ODI series. India had won a bilateral T20I series they played in Australia last time by the margin of 3-0. With the defeat in the opening game, Kohli will not be able to match that record of former captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni though his side can still win the series to make it three out of three this year.
