Former Indian skipper MS Dhoni called it a day on his international captaincy career on January 4 and while everyone was surprised and wished he would have carried on we all waited for Virender Sehwag’s take on it. Ever since retiring from international cricket he has been expressive about his opinions and has made the best use of his Twitter account that has over 8 million followers.
But he didn’t tweet anything about Dhoni, he probably wanted to add a lot more than what a tweet could contain. Today in an exclusive write-up for Cricket Talkies, Viru said it came earlier than he expected and he certainly thought Dhoni would retire on the 7th given his love for the number.
“Mahendra Singh Dhoni resigned as captain of Indian One Day and T20I team on 4th January. This has happened a few days earlier than I expected. 7 is his favourite number and I thought it was apt to wish him the very best going forward as a wicket-keeper batsman on the 7th.” Sehwag said.
He praised Dhoni as not just a cricketer but as a human being as well and mentioned that he has a huge heart. Viru also pointed out that the last match Dhoni played as skipper he was wearing his mother’s name on his back and that certainly is a pretty good observation. The Indian players wore the names of their mother’s in the last ODI against New Zealand as a part of a campaign to express their respect for their mother who has always had a lot to sacrifice for them to be in a place where they are.

“His skills on the field as a player and captain are known to everyone, but he is a even better human being with a big big heart. It’s also fitting that he and the team played with names of their mother on the India jersey in the last match he captained for India. I wish him all the best in everything that he does,” Sehwag concluded.
