Virender Sehwag trolls himself recalling his king-pair versus England back in 2011
India lost that game by an innings and 242 runs.
Virender Sehwag was a kind of player, who never shied away from playing his strokes from the outset, irrespective of the format of the game. The Nawab of Najafgarh, as he is popularly known, didn’t prefer allowing the bowlers to settle down. The right-hander was a crowd puller during his playing days because of the approach he used to take on the field with the bat in hand.
The tactics worked for him a number of times as he is still the only Indian with a couple of Test triple-centuries. He didn’t have the soundest of techniques, but the fact that he had a great hand and eye conditions made him a daunting prospect to deal with. However, in conditions where the leather would jag around in the initial phases, Sehwag was found napping a few times.
A nightmare for Virender Sehwag
It dates back to August 2011 during the third Test of India’s tour of England when Sehwag had a rather rough outing. At the Edgbaston in Birmingham, he managed to bag a pair. To make things worse, in both the innings, he was dismissed for a golden duck. Stuart Broad accounted for the prized wicket with a short ball after skipper Andrew Strauss resorted to the Decision Review System.
In the second innings, he played a rather casual shot off James Anderson. The ball took the outside edge and went into the safe palms of Strauss, who didn’t make any mistake at first slip. The game not only was a nightmare for Sehwag, but also for the Indian team. The MS Dhoni-captained unit lost by a mammoth margin of an innings and 242 runs after getting bowled out for 224 and 244.
In the meantime, after eight long years, Sehwag went down the memory lane and remembered the game. Sehwag revealed how he got the pair after flying for two days and fielding for 188 overs where the hosts scored 710/7 declared.
He took to Twitter and wrote, “On this day 8 years ago, I scored a king pair vs England in Birmingham after flying for 2 days to reach England and fielding 188 overs. Unwillingly paid tribute to Aryabhatta If there was zero chance of failure, what would you do? If you have it figured, do that,”
