South African batsman and one of the modern greats AB De Villiers was at his robust best against a hapless Bangladesh side in the 2nd ODI between the two sides. The middle-order batsman whacked 15 boundaries and seven sixes to bring up his 25th ton in 50-over format. He also went past his previous highest score of unbeaten 162* against West Indies in the year 2015.
The legendary cricketer threatened to break the 21-year old record of the highest individual score by a South African in ODI cricket. Former opener Gary Kirsten still finds himself at the top, courtesy his 188* not out against UAE in the 1996 World Cup.
The in-form batsman ended up 12 runs short of Kirsten’s score, as he was held at deep midwicket in the 48th over. In the process, AB brought up the fifth-highest score by a South African in ODI cricket. Interestingly, De Villiers has eight out of the top 10 fastest hundreds by a Proteas batsman in ODIs; tells you how good he has been over the years and the manner in which an individual can dominate a team sport.
Sehwag’s curse
Former Indian cricketer Virender Sehwag was impressed by the big hitting and he tweeted” Wow ! what smashing by AB De villiers. Should become the first middle -order batsman to score an ODI-double”. But as it happened, the Proteas hitter got out soon after, leaving Sehwag in disbelief. He then tweeted “Sorry ABdeVilliers17, nazar lag gayi . But always a delight to watch you smash bowlers. Incredible hitting !”

The hosts were in slight trouble when De Villiers came out to bat, as the scorecard read 90/2. He forged a 136-run partnership with Amla, before the later got out for 85. South Africa posted 353/5 at the end of their 50 overs, with De Villiers scoring 176 off 104 balls.
