Wanna Score a Hundred on Test Debut? Call us Maybe
Wanna Score a Hundred on Test Debut? Call us Maybe: The longest form of the game, test cricket is widely regarded as the most challenging format for the batsmen as they have to negotiate the swing of the red ball in comparison with the white ball used in the limited overs’ format. A batsman’s patience, temperament, skill and tenacity all are put into a test of fire in the test format.
In such a tough form of the game, getting a hundred is a cherishable moment and a priced possession for the batters, and if it is a hundred on debut then that is the best thing you can ever ask for as a batsman. 99 cricketers have scored test hundreds on their debut and have announced themselves as future contenders for glory in international cricket. Some have faded away after such a dream start while some have made the wonderful start count and made it big in the career eventually.
C. Bannerman of Australia was the first ever batsman to score a hundred on debut in test matches. He did that against arch-rivals England in the year 1877. He scored 165 not out. Great servants of the game like the English cricketer WG Grace also makes it into the list of players who racked up tons on their debut. Grace is regarded extensively as one of the greatest English batters of his time.
Former Indian captain Lala Amarnath features in the list as he scored a memorable debut ton of 118 runs off 185 balls against England at Mumbai. The former Australian captain Greg Chappell, one of the most elegant stroke makers of the game finds his name in the celebrated list. He scored 108 runs against England in his debut. The man who has played most world cups (6) Javed Miandad, the Pakistani legend scored his maiden ton against New Zealand and earned a place in the list.
Mark Waugh of Australia is in here as well for his debut hundred against England at Adelaide. Sourav Ganguly the legendary Indian captain scored his maiden ton against England and to make it even more memorable it was struck at the Mecca of cricket, the Lord’s. Younis Khan of Pakistan also finds his name listed. Virendar Sehwag the two time triple centurion in tests also features in the list with a brilliant century against South Africa on debut. Suresh Raina, one of the very few players to score centuries in all three forms of the game gets his name inscribed in the decorated list as well for his hundred against Sri Lanka. Most recently, Adam Voges of Australia has been the latest entrant into the list after he scored a memorable ton against West Indies on 4th June 2015.
