Former Pakistani cricketer Waqar Younis has been named as the chief mentor of the Islamabad United for the upcoming 2018 edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL). Waqar attended the official press conference of the franchise that was held recently. The Islamabad franchise were the winners of the inaugural edition of the tournament.
This is not the first time that Waqar Younis will be donning a senior hat in a team dressing room. He is a vastly experienced cricket veteran who has also served in the capacity of the head coach of the Pakistan national side. As per the recent quotes in brecorder, Waqar conceded that his job in the United dressing room will be to guide the players on and off the field. He will be telling them to stick to a good and healthy cricket lifestyle.
“My prime task will be to guide the players on and off the field and tell them how to avoid this malpractice as this can easily derail a good career,” said Waqar.
On match fixing
Last year, the PSL was hit hard by the spot fixing scandal. Five big names from the Islamabad camp found their names spring up in the scandal. Sharjeel Khan, Khalid Latif, Mohammad Irfan, Shahzaib Hasan and Nasir Jamshed were all caught in the scandal. The team was certainly hit hard by the news. Waqar mentioned that the roots of the spot fixing are very deep in the setup.
He hopes to do his best to contribute to the team’s cause by ensuring that the players do not indulge in any such activity this year. The franchise certainly has huge expectations from Waqar and hopefully, his services will come good for the team.
“The roots of fixing are very deep. It still exists at all levels so we need to have joint and concerted efforts to eradicate this menace,” Waqar Younis quoted.
