The plans for the reunion of Pakistan’s legendary fast bowling pair, Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis ended up as a dream as Waqar failed to reach an agreement with the Pakistan Super League (PSL) franchise Multan Sultans. Waqar, who hails from Multan, was expected to join the new franchise as the head coach.
The Multan Sultans, owned by a Dubai-based enterprise, Schön Group had already signed Wasim Akram as their director of cricket operations. The franchise is the sixth team of the PSL, which included five sides in the first two seasons. Waqar didn’t feature in any form during the first two seasons and was approached by the Multan in June this year.
“I have been in discussions with them but sadly we didn’t reach a final agreement,” Waqar told ESPNcricinfo. “They [Multan owners] are good people and I was delighted to have an offer mainly because the idea of reuniting with Wasim Akram was fascinating. Both of us working for the same cause of cricket for the same team would have been great. I wish Wasim bhai very good luck with his plans to form his own team.” He added.
Multan cancels the shoot with Waqar and Wasim
Wasim and Waqar were a dangerous bowling pair during their times, standing amongst the greatest duos ever in the history of the game. They together featured in 61 Test matches for Pakistan and collectively picked up 559 wickets; standing only behind Courtney Walsh/Curtley Ambrose and James Anderson/Stuart Broad combination.
Multan Sultans, who planned a shoot with Waqar and Wasim on Tuesday in Multan, refused to comment after the event was postponed as the deal couldn’t be sealed. Despite playing a larger part of their careers together, Waqar’s interview with Geo Sports on Monday hinted that there might be problems between him and Akram.
“Wasim bhai will make whatever team they put together and probably I don’t come in that plan… which I have probably never been in his plans,” Waqar told Geo Sports. “I always wanted to be part of Multan because it’s linked with where I’m from, the city and region of South Punjab where I am from, so it’s unfortunate,” he stated.
