Pakistan and their coach Waqar Younis boarded the early flight back home following a horrendous debacle in the 2016 edition of the World T20 in India. While venue controversies and security issues played their roles, the Pakistanis put up a substandard and amateurish performance. The PCB summoned skipper Shahid Afridi and coach Waqar Younis to explain what happened.
According to the sources, Waqar has given a “damning report on the team players”. Waqar Younis’s report includes his entire two-year stint with the Pakistan cricket team.
“Waqar has given a damning report on the team players and has said that most of the players were not able to implement the game plan given to them by the coach,” a source said.
Waqar pointed out that some of the players were simply not willing to work hard enough and failed to execute the plans suggested to them. The former Pakistan pacer has also questioned the leadership skills of skipper Shahid Afridi. In a nutshell, Waqar Younis’ report suggests that he is far from happy with this Pakistani side.
“Waqar has specifically pinpointed that some of the players are just not willing to work hard enough or cooperate with the coaching staff by executing the suggestions given to them,” he added.
“Waqar has also questioned the captaincy skills of Shahid Afridi and some of his decisions. In totality, the head coach is clearly not happy with the way the players have responded or shown improvement in their game.”
The complete report filed in by Waqar Younis is now expected to be examined by the fact-finding committee. The committee includes current Test skipper Misbah-ul-Haq and senior batsman Younis Khan.
“Waqar has submitted a complete report on his two-year tenure and the chairman has sent the report to the fact-finding committee for its observations,” the source said.
“Waqar is himself hugely disappointed at the way his two-year tenure has gone and has also spoken about the way the national selectors coordinated with him in selection matters,” the source informed.
“Shahid is also due to leave for Lahore tomorrow to appear before the fact-finding committee,” another source said.
Although Afridi’s tenure as skipper may be well and truly over, Waqar has mentioned his name among other senior players who are to be sidelined for the team’s cause.
“Shahid is aware that his days as Pakistan captain are over but he is trying to extend his international career by being available only as a player. But Waqar has included his name among the senior players he believes need to be sidelined from the team,” he added.
