Waqar Younis and Wasim Akram were two of the most successful bowlers for Pakistan. It is tough to compare between the two legends of the game. 45-year-old Vehari born Waqar played 87 Tests and 262 ODIs for his country. The 51-year-old Lahore born Wasim featured in 104 Tests and 356 ODIs for the green shirts. The former has picked 373 wickets in Tests and 416 wickets in ODIs.

The latter boasts of 414 Test wickets and 502 ODI wickets. Both of them were very competitive on the field. But at the same, shared a great bond between each other. Younis once said that he owes 50% of his International wickets to Wasim and believes that he was able to make a name for himself only because his competitor in the team was as good as Wasim Akram.

“It was because if Wasim took two wickets, I wanted to take three. Or if I took three, he wanted to take four. So there was always a very healthy rivalry between us. And the Pakistan team benefitted from it,” once the former Pakistani head coach said. When the two combined together, it meant nightmare to many legendary batters. The two Ws of Pakistani cricket rules the pace circuit during the 90s.

Down the memory lane

The two took their bond of friendship to a new level with a series of tweets. Waqar Younis first tweeted a 1992 picture of him alongside Wasim Akram taken at Lord’s. The caption of the picture read “Down the memory lane #Lords 1992. “My favourite Test match”.Me &The Legend @wasimakramlive won it with the Bat #SweetMemories.

Akram took an overdose of nostalgia after looking at the picture. In his reply, he wrote, “Those were the days Raqa @waqyounis99 We were fast, furious and fearless.” They indeed were, since during that series, Geoffrey Boycott came to the conclusion that Pakistan would be able to bowl the Three Lions out even if they bowled with oranges.

The last tweet of the series was a confession from Waqar. He wrote “”90s” The Golden era of Pak????Cricket..If I get another opportunity 2 choose who I want 2 be, I’ll say @wasimakramlive #TrueLegend #Respect.”
