Washington Sundar becomes 2nd youngest to score a fifty in Duleep Trophy final

Washington Sundar joined his team-mate Prithvi Shaw on the 2nd day of Duleep Trophy final in breaking records as the 17-year-old from Tamil Nadu struck 88 before getting out 12 runs short of a well-deserved hundred. The left-handed all-rounder hit six fours and five sixes during his 118-ball stay at the crease before holing out as the final wicket in India Red innings. Washington, who came into this game at the age of 17 years and 355 days, became the 8th youngest player to score a half-century in Duleep Trophy.
He is only the 2nd youngest to score in a Duleep Trophy final after Prithvi Shaw, who scored 154 earlier in this game. The Mumbai batsman (17 years and 320 days) is only 35 days younger than Washington. India Red, who elected to bat first posted a big total of 483 in their first innings on a turner. Shaw’s 154 along with his captain Dinesh Karthik’s 111 laid the foundation for a big total while the all-rounder added crucial runs to increase the troubles for India Blue side.
Youngest to score a fifty in Duleep Trophy:
Had Washington scored a century, he could have been only the 3rd youngest to score a century in Duleep Trophy and the 2nd youngest after Prthivi Shaw to do so in the DT final. Sachin Tendulkar scored two centuries in this tournament while he was younger than Shaw. Prior to this game, no player scored a fifty before turning 18 in the Duleep Trophy final but Prithvi scored a 150+ and Washington too nearly scored a century.
With the help of his fifty, the Tamil Nadu player became the 5th youngest to score a fifty on Duleep Trophy debut with Prithvi Shaw being the 4th youngest. Sachin, Piyush Chawla and Ravindra Jadeja are the other names with a Duleep Trophy fifty on debut before turning 18.
