Wasim Akram's biggest contribution to Pakistan cricket is to make sure they didn't win World Cup after 1992: Aamer Sohail

There have been many stories of former Pakistan cricketers accusing their ex-teammates. Another such incidentt came to light on Tuesday when Aamer Sohail blamed Wasim Akram for Pakistan’s failure to win a World Cup after 1992.

Sohail pointed out that a year before the 1996 World Cup, Ramiz Raja was made the captain. Saleem Malik was at the helm before who was successful and if he had continued for another year, Wasim wouldn’t have led the side according to him. Eventually, in the mega event, Akram captained the Pakistan team while Sohail was his deputy.

“It’s very simple. Put the 92 World Cup to one side and talk about the 1996 World Cup. In 1995, Ramiz Raja was captain. Saleem Malik was the captain before that, he was very successful and if he could have spent one more year as captain then Wasim Akram would not have been leading the side,” said Sohail, according to the report in Cricket Pakistan.

The former opener pointed out that before every World Cup, there was an attempt to remove the captain and make Akram the leader of the pack. The left-arm seamer went on to lead the team at 1999 World Cup as well, where Pakistan ended up as the runners-up after losing to Australia in the final.

“If you look at what happened till 2003, there was this persistence before every World Cup to remove the captain and put Wasim Akram in that role,” he claimed. Aamer Sohail also went on to say that Wasim Akram’s biggest contribution was to make sure Pakistan didn’t win a World Cup after 1992. The 53-year-old claimed that Pakistan would have won the trophies in 1996, 1999 and 2003, if the legendary pacer was sincere with the team.

“Look, the biggest contribution by Wasim Akram for Pakistan cricket was making sure Pakistan does not win a World Cup after 92. Imran Khan should be very grateful to him and he is by awarding him the presidential award. If he [Akram] was sincere with Pakistan, we would have easily won the 96, 99 and 2003 World Cups”, claimed Aamer.

Furthermore, the ex-Pakistan international player also said that the drama happened for some reason and it should be investigated. “All of this drama happened for a reason. This should be investigated. The culprit behind all this should be brought to the forefront,” he concluded. Aamer Sohail played 47 Tests and scored 2823 runs. In his 156 ODIs, Sohail scored 4780 runs during the career that spanned between 1990 and 2000.
