Wasim Jaffer comes up with a cheeky tweet after 'Lord' Shardul Thakur gets ruled out of Lord's Test

Former Indian batter Wasim Jaffer never misses an opportunity to put out a meme on his Twitter account or make a joke or two. On the eve of the second Test between England and India at Lord’s, Jaffer tweeted a joke on Shardul Thakur. The bowling all-rounder is set to miss the second Test after having a hamstring injury. 

On Wednesday, Indian skipper Virat Kohli updated the media that Thakur, who was India’s fourth seamer in the first Test in Trent Bridge, is set to miss the Lord’s Test. His injury doesn’t seem bad enough as of now for entirely ruling him out of the tour but India would hope that he is fit for the third Test which will start on August 25, nine days after the second Test is scheduled to finish.

Coming back to Jaffer’s tweet, as soon as the news of Thakur being injured and not available was revealed, the former cricketer posted the joke. He wrote that the pacer missed out on an opportunity to play at the stadium named after him. He tweeted, “It’s sad if Shardul Thakur misses the Lord’s Test. After all not often cricketers get to play in a stadium named after them.”

This is a direct reference to the nickname Mumbaikar has got because of his exploits in recent times. Thakur means God or Lord in a few Indian languages. After Thakur had turned around some of the matches for India in ODIs and T20Is, he went on to do so with his performance at the Gabba. Since then, he has been called by the nickname ‘Lord Shardul Thakur’ by fans on Twitter and other social media platforms. 

Thakur is an important member of India’s plan this summer in England. Having shown his ability with the bat across formats and at both international and domestic cricket, Thakur was preferred as a seam-bowling all-rounder ahead of Ravichandran Ashwin. Kohli after the first Test confirmed that India will continue with a four-pacer attack with Thakur at no. 8. 

But, his injury has created a few questions in front of the Indian think tank. His absence may bring in Ashwin and India may be forced to revert back to their two spinners-three pacers strategy. Alternatively, India could bring in Ishant Sharma, but that would spoil the balance and could potentially expose the tail. India will announce their XI at the toss on Thursday.
