After the Indian team’s exit from the ICC World Cup 2019, there have been many questions raised about the team management’s decisions particularly in relation to selection decisions and strategies employed during the semi-final match, have brought Virat Kohli’s captaincy under the scanner. Many felt that it was a golden chance for the Men in Blue to become three-time winners, but they squandered it.

Virat Kohli’s leadership in white-ball cricket has always been questioned given that he is often seen dependent on the likes of MS Dhoni and his deputy Rohit Sharma for decisions and some of his decisions made no sense, like sending in MS Dhoni at no.7 in the all-important semi-final against New Zealand. He also decided to leave Mohammad Shami out of the XI for the knockout game, despite him being in great form.

Such decisions have left experts and fans scratching their heads and though no one has asked Kohli to step down from captaincy; his leadership has been questioned a lot. One of the most presented arguments has been how he has been leading RCB for almost a decade in IPL but hasn’t led them to the title yet and they have made the finals just once under his captaincy.

Wasim Jaffer wants Rohit Sharma to lead India in 2023 World Cup

Former India Test opener and stalwarts of domestic cricket, Wasim Jaffer has raised a valid point about the Indian captaincy in the limited-overs format. Jaffer feels that the time is right to hand over the white-ball captaincy to Rohit Sharma and let Kohli take the reins in Test cricket, a format where he has kept the Indian team at the pinnacle of ICC rankings for a long time now. Jaffer also mentioned that he would have Rohit leading India in 2023 World Cup, to be played in India.

Jaffer tweeted, “Is it time to hand over white ball captaincy to Rohit Sharma? I would like him to lead India in 2023 World Cup????”

Jaffer’s argument may stand correct, as Rohit Sharma has proved himself to be a capable leader who doesn’t get flustered when things don’t go the team’s way in a match. Kohli is known to show his pleasure and displeasure at crunch moments on the field, something that may not be good for the fielders. Rohit won the Asia Cup in 2018 and the Nidahas T20 tri-series in the same year in Sri Lanka.

Moreover, he has proved himself in IPL as well, winning four titles for Mumbai Indians as captain since 2013. Given that Kohli keeps taking breaks from international cricket regularly to relieve himself from some pressure, it’s better to let him be the best batsman in the team than to burden him with the captaincy as well. Let Rohit take all that pressure and he has shown that he scores runs as well when he is captain.
