The Durban Cricket Academy from Durban South Africa uploaded a video on their Facebook page of a little master. He wears a helmet like all professional cricketers, a pair of gloves on his hands and holds a bat pretty tight and upright, the running shoes are there as well. But there are no pads possibly because cricketing pads as tiny as his legs probably aren’t manufactured. The master we are talking about here is 24 months (2 years) old Deandre.
He has a high bat lift, the bat is proportionately designed but is still big, and to him, the practice ball must appear larger than just a cricket ball. Of course, he is just a 2-year-old kid who should be just hanging around with his toy and riding their tricycles Deandre here is all geared up facing the ball machine. Mind you he isn’t just swinging the bat at arriving balls but has a decent footwork, reaches out to the ball, he picks the delivery and the direction he wants to hit them in.
If it is outside the off-stump he hits it towards the covers when the ball is straighter has a beautiful lofted shot that’d sail over the bowlers head into the stands. The body position, the bat follow through are such a treat to watch. He looks to be an aggressive batsman and in his attempt to go for a powerful shot even top edged one ball.
The number of practice balls in his nets definitely suggest the kid is working really hard on his cricket at a very early age. If this is any indication South African cricket already has a star in making. It is such a pleasing sight to watch young kids take interest in the game keeps the hopes right high when we think what is the future of the gentleman’s game? Deandre is!
