Watch: A nasty Brett Lee bouncer hits Brendon McCullum on the nose
The first match of the inaugural KFC Big Bash League saw the Sydney Sixers take on the Brisbane Heat at the SCG. Winning the toss, Brisbane openers Matthew Hayden and Brendon McCullum came out to bat.
The aggressive opening duo had played out two sedate overs before Brett Lee came on to bowl the third over. Sensing a need to up the ante, Baz skipped down the track to a nicely disguised slower delivery only managing to get a fine edge. Thankfully for him the ball didn’t carry to Haddin behind the stumps.
Things weren’t so lucky for him after the next ball, though. Lee ran in steaming and delivered a nasty bouncer which struck McCullum flush on his nose and led to some profuse bleeding.
As it can be seen in this video, McCullum was clearly rushed for pace as he was late on to the pull. He played under the ball as it sneaked past the grill to strike his nose. Though he didn’t seem too baffled, the bleeding just wouldn’t cease.
All the opposition players including Lee himself were seemingly concerned about the situation. Despite the physio’s effort and a lot of time spent wiping the blood off with a towel, McCullum had to go off the field retired hurt.
After the fall of the first wicket in the form of James Hopes, McCullum did return to the crease again. Though he didn’t last long and fell for 5 to MacGill. Later Sixers’ captain Brad Haddin led from the front to see his team chase down the target with no fuss.
