Hit the ball twice, handled the ball, obstructing the field, retired out and timed out are generally regarded as the unusual ways of dismissals in cricket, where the bowler is denied any credit. Apart from these world cricket has witnessed many strange hit wicket dismissals. Though, a match in Pakistan’s domestic one-day cricket competition produced one of the most unusual dismissals ever to be seen in the game.

A right-arm off spinner bowling round the wicket to the left-handed batsman tossed one up generously inviting a big shot. The ball had ‘hit me’ written all over it at such gentle pace. The batsman obliged and chose the safest hitting zone-down the ground. Unfortunately for the non-striker’s liking, the ball rocketed from the willow straight in his direction giving him no time to sway out of the line. It hit him bang on the head and he wasn’t wearing a helmet, which made the situation even worse. He collapsed on the ground in pain holding his head even as the fielders rushed to inspect the injury.

He collapsed on the ground in pain holding his head even as the fielders rushed to inspect the injury.

While all of this was happening, the bad had ricocheted off the head in the air and the bowler, having caught the ball comfortably, looked at the umpire, appealed and was seen jumping for joy without realising the events that transpired behind his back.

Medical attention was called for by the fielders immediately while the non-striker kept lying down. The striker was thus out caught in such bizarre circumstances. He kept wandering around being completely perplexed about what had happened.

This dismissal once again proves the necessity of helmets for batsmen, closing fielders and umpires as well. The speed at which the ball travels, one hardly gets any reaction time and a protective gear can come to the rescue on such unfortunate instances.
