Who comes to our mind when we think of huge sixes? Chris Gayle? AB de Villiers? Kieron Pollard? MS Dhoni perhaps? What about the little known Aiden Blizzard? Yes, the 32-year-old Victorian may be known due to his stint with the Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League, but there is nothing so special about a domestic top order batsman whose highest average is 30 isn’t it? Well, he may well hold the record for the longest six ever.

In January 2008, Blizzard was representing Victoria in the final of the KFC Tournament, featuring 6 teams, against Western Australia. Although he had been under par that tournament, he certainly made an unforgettable contribution in the final that fast-tracked his team to the title. In an unparalleled assault, he pummelled Danny McLachlan for 28 runs in the 4th over of the innings which included 4 sixes and a four.

The third of those sixes was easily the best of the lot. The WACA is humongous as it is, but this hit cleared not only the stadium but landed in the car park next to it. To be fair, the delivery was a long hop, a half tracker with no pace right in the favourable arc for a left-hander, and Blizzard, being in that mindset already, got it in the meat of his bat in a golf swing. The ball flew from the middle, high and long, so much so that even the batsman expressed astonishment at the magnitude of the shot.

Although not officially measured, it is speculated that the six was at least 130 metres long, since the length of WACA itself is 128 metres. Although the ball was assisted by the favourable wind direction, it definitely was a commendable display of Blizzard’s might and timing and another indication of the influx of talent that the player possessed. On back of his belligerent 20-ball 47, Victoria managed to amass 203 runs in 20 overs and win the final comfortably by 32 runs.

Have a look at this rip-roaring shot, and estimate the distance for yourself. This certainly was one of the biggest, if not the biggest, six in cricket history.
