Watch: Alastair Cook castled by Mohammed Shami with a perfect inswinger
Mohammed Shami gave the Vizag crowd a moment to cherish when he castled opposition captain Alastair Cook during the 2nd day’s play of the 2nd Test on Friday. It was the third delivery of the third over as Shami bowled a perfect inswinger that jagged back sharply to take the top of the off stump. Not only did it hit the off stump, but the ball did enough to break the top of the off stump while the bottom part remained grounded.
The early breakthrough was just what the doctor ordered for the Men in Blue after scoring 455 in their 1st innings. Shami had set up Cook with two balls angling away from him and the visiting captain was expecting the 3rd delivery to behave the same way. The next ball, though, behaved differently as it kept its line and moved back sharply to get through the defense of Cook. The broken part of the stump was eventually fetched by Ajinkya Rahane from the short third man position.
India began Day 3 on 317/4 with captain Virat Kohli and Ravichandran Ashwin starting proceedings. While Kohli fell for a well made 167, Ashwin once again proved to be a valuable asset to the team scoring a well composed 58. Debutant Jayant Yadav looked composed at the crease scoring a defiant 35 and stitched together a much needed 77 run partnership with Ashwin.
The Cook dismissal was followed by a procession of wickets as the visitors were left reeling at 93/5 by the end of 45 overs with Ashwin picking two and Shami and debutant Jayant Yadav chipping in with a wicket each. It was a dream debut for the off spinner from Haryana as he was also involved in running out Haseeb Hameed which triggered the English collapse.
