Watch: Angelo Mathews gets dismissal in a bizarre manner: New Zealand had a perfect start to their home series against the touring Sri Lanka as they won the first Test by a convincing 122 runs. Having set a target of 405 for the Sri Lankans to win, New Zealand looked in total control with the ball.
Among so many interesting things that happened in the game, one that caught the attention of all was the bizarre dismissal of Sri Lanka skipper Angelo Mathews in the second innings. Sri Lanka were moving along steadily with 165/3 with Chandimal batting on 58 and Mathews on 25 when a Neil Wagner delivery uprooted the middle stump of the Sri Lankan skipper.
Things fell apart for the Lankans after that as wickets kept tumbling at regular intervals and no fruitful partnership could spring up. Sri Lanka were bowled out for 282.
Wagner beautifully set it up for Mathews in the 71st over. He bowled two short deliveries to Mathews. He was expecting another short ball to come his way, but Wagner was smart enough to bowl a full-length delivery on the middle stump.
To Mathews’ surprise, the ball took the left pad and nutmegged him to take the middle pole down. He could be seen standing absolutely clueless without even moving his bat. His bat could not come down in time, in fact, did not even move at all. He pre-meditated and got into a position to let the ball go through, which perhaps was the reason why he couldn’t bring the bat down in time. In any case, the wicket was an absolute delight to watch as the middle stump was uprooted – the perfect sight for any fast bowler. Wagner had the cherry this time!
