Watch: Angelo Mathews saves a certain six with his mind blowing fielding in a T20 v West Indies: The fielding standards have soared so high in the last decade or so; that it can act as the point to determine how well cricket has evolved in the period. Every player now has no fear but enthusiasm on his mind while going out to field, stop or catch the ball. With lush outfields and regular training the techniques are so good that the doubts of getting injured have rubbed off as well. Here we see Sri Lankan all-rounder Angelo Mathews display utmost commitment while on the field; he saved a certain six with his mind blowing fielding in a T20 game v the West Indies.
Mathews was guarding the fence towards the long on region and with the spinner operating, the batting side needed 59 to win from 24 balls; he had to go for the big shots against the slower bowler and he did just that. The batsman heaved the ball in the air and it was a good enough strike to fetch him 6 runs. But that was where Mathews’ presence of mind, quick thinking and athleticism obstructed the ideal situation for the batsman.
He dived in the air, over the ropes, when he knew he will not be able to hold back inside the fence; Mathews played a tennis like chop with his hand and sliced the ball inside the boundary, it flew back with force and as the Sri Lankan all-rounder dropped out of the boundary area, the ball was comfortably inside the limits. One of the better fielding displays we get to see, even in this age of cricket.
