Watch: Dale Steyn disturbs the furniture of Michael Vaughan on his Test debut
Watch: Dale Steyn disturbs the furniture of Michael Vaughan on his Test debut: Dale Steyn is easily the best fast bowler in the world. His numbers in Test cricket are quite enviable. He is the joint fastest to reach 400 Test wickets in 80 games, amongst fast bowlers. Not only that, his strike rate of 41.5 is the best among bowlers who’ve taken more than 112 wickets.
Eleven years ago when he made his Test debut against England, he had two of the most successful South African bowlers as his teammates, Shaun Pollock and Makhaya Ntini. In the years to come, Steyn would become the most feared bowler of his era, but in his debut game, he was picked as the 3rd seaming option. His ability to swing the ball both ways at a great speed caught everyone’s imagination. He was the next big thing!
In the first innings, England piled on a 425 in reply to South Africa’s 337. In the 2nd innings South Africa folded for 229 setting a gettable 145 as the target for the visitors England. The opening bowlers had taken the first two wickets in quick succession and onus now was on the young Steyn to provide with a breakthrough. Even though Vaughan and Strauss resisted Steyn for a bit, Steyn got better of the former eventually. In the 15th over, Steyn bowled an unplayable delivery to take the wicket of the English skipper, Michael Vaughan.
Even though South Africa lost the test, Steyn will remember this amazing delivery in his first game, which he has replicated in the years that followed.
