The Hong Kong’s T20 Blitz saw a turbulent knock from West Indies power-hitter Dwayne Smith as he scored a 31 ball century on Wednesday. The highly entertaining display of batting joined the list of the fastest centuries ever made in T20 cricket.

Smith looked in the mood to destroy the opponents from the very beginning as he smashed 28 on the first over itself and managed to secure a mammoth 121 runs facing only 40 deliveries to do the same.

The retired international’s century helped his team Kowloon Cantons to reign supreme over City Kaitak by eight wickets and also gave the toughest scare to Chris Gayle’s 30 ball century scored in the Indian Premier League. Smith registered his rampant display of hitting against an attack which clearly struggled and on Hong Kong’s modestly sized Mission Road ground.

Things went wrong from the start for Kaitak as slow left arm bowler Nadeem Ahmed fell on the wrong side of a Dwayne Smith violation on the very first over. Smith manhandled the bowler with four sixes and a four to score 28 in just 5 balls.

The West Indians targeted Nadeem Ahmed in the sixth over again when Marlon Samuels started the over with a six only to give the strike to Smith who was in a mood to kill. The batsman who has been a part of both the Indian Premier League and the Pakistan Super League, quite expectedly ripped apart Ahmed hitting another four sixes.

Smith brought up his hundred in the 12th over where he went for the maximum for the 11th time in the innings and managed a total of 13 maximums in the whole knock. Teammate Marlon Samuels played steady innings on the other hand by ensuring an unbeaten 59 contributing hugely to the team’s 204 for two wickets.

“Well, basically it was a great pitch and I must commend the groundsman for that,” said Smith, according to the South China Morning Post.

“For me, it was just a case of going out there and being confident and staying as positive as I can be. It’s a small ground, a good pitch and that’s a recipe for runs.”

Dwayne Smith, Marlon Samuels, skipper Darren Sammy and Englishman Ian Bell are among the popular names that are taking part in the Hong Kong T20 Blitz which is now in its second year.
