Have you ever heard a batsman walking out to bat without a bat in hand? It might be confusing for some of the readers to understand what I am talking about but it is exactly what happened during a Sheffield Shield match today. No. 11 batsman Fawad Ahmed playing for Victoria strolled out to bat without the willow in his hand. He was wearing all the cricketing gears including pad, gloves and helmet but forgot the most important thing which was needed to counter the opponent bowlers.

Ahmed walked some distance after realising that he wasn’t carrying the bat in his hand. He then again moved back towards the dugout and one of his teammates handed over the bat to him. Immediately after Fawad came out in the middle, one of the opponent fielder and his partner had a laugh out in the middle about the rare incident in cricket. Being an ardent cricket fan for the last 15 years, I hardly remember any of this sort happening in a cricket field. Ahmed eventually remained unbeaten on zero after facing 7 deliveries.

A wily leg spinner who made his first-class debut in Pakistan and played 10 matches there fled to Australia in 2010 as an asylum seeker. Ahmed was involved with an NGO in Pakistan that aimed to educate women.

This led to threats from extremists which made Ahmed flee to Australia. Asylum seeking is right to international protection in any other country. A person becomes an asylum seeker by lodging a formal application for the rights to remain in the country until the application has been concluded.

A sharp turner of the ball, he was called by many former AUstrakian cricketers as the best spinner in the country after the legendary Shane Warne. Stuart MacGill said that he was biomechanically similar to Anil Kumble but extracted more spin. A graceful batsman, Damien Martyn also called him the best spinner in Australia after facing him in the nets.
