Watch: Hilarious Andrew Flintoff Commentary while batting in BBL
Andrew Flintoff has always been an entertainer of sorts. The 2005 Ashes Series in England is the perfect illustration of his entertainment prowess with bat and ball. Boxing and sledging too can be added to the list of ‘Freddie’s talents’. The former England all-rounder also served as commentator in the 4th edition of the Big Bash League.
Big Freddie’s commentary skills however, were put to the test in the previous edition of the BBL. Although the clash between the Brisbane Heat and the Hobart Hurricanes was memorable, it will be remembered for the most unusual of reasons.
The final over of the first innings saw Flintoff make a cameo appearance in batting gear. Although he did not face a single delivery, Freddie’s appearance at the wicket towards the end of the innings was a memorable one. Commentators Ricky Ponting and Adam Gilchrist handed over the reins of commentary to Flintoff, who was on the mic for the final delivery of the innings.
In expert commentary style, Freddie went on to describe the final ball of the Brisbane Heat innings. “Mennie comes charging in. He jumps in his coil He digs it out, he’s coming back, he’s not even looking. He’s got two!”
Ponting and Gilchrist tried their best to overthrow Freddie by stating that the umpire had given one run less. The hilarious Mr. Flintoff, however, remained un-fluttered as his side finished off on an impressive 208/6 off 20 overs.
Despite narrowly losing the game, Freddie was eventually recruited into the Big Bash commentary team the following year. It certainly no surprise to see Freddie on the commentary roster for the Big Bash League following his commentary exploits in 2014-15 BBL.
