Watch: The most hilarious incident of the day involving Steve Smith and Wriddhiman Saha
Australian captain Steve Smith batted almost for the entire day as he worked hard to prove his decision to bat first worthy in the third Test at Ranchi. He walked out to bat in the 10th over after the dismissal of David Warner and negotiated against the Indian pacers as well as spinners. It is an excellent batting surface with little assistance for the bowlers and Smith has ensured Australia capitalize on the advantage they have batting first on this wicket.
After losing three partners without any substantial contribution he finally found a stable support from Glenn Maxwell. The duo stitched together a 100-run partnership and took the team over 250 for the loss of 4 wickets. Smith was batting with absolute ease even against reverse swing that was enforced by both the Indian seamers Umesh Yadav and Ishant Sharma.
Smith batted in the 90s for almost an hour and while he was on 97 something really funny happened. On the third ball of the 80th over from Ravindra Jadeja, it looked like the right-hander inside edged the ball. It deflected back in between his legs and was stuck there.
Indian wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha noticed the ball was still in play and attempted to grab it, but Smith was holding it pretty firm between his legs and when he noticed that the keeper was attempting to catch it the Australian skipper went down on the ground trying to get the ball touchdown.
Saha all this while hadn’t let go of the ball and still had his hands under Smith’s legs and hilariously managed to grab the ball. The bowler Jadeja and Saha also chose to raise a ‘how was that’ for it with the umpire but Ian Gould standing as the officiating umpire at the bowlers end then also saw the funny side to it and rather left his mark laughing.
Everyone was laughing at how the incident transpired apart from Smith, which suggests he might have edged it but there was no clear evidence of an edge either. The ball wasn’t declared dead by the umpire as the rule only marks those deliveries that get stuck in the batsman’s pads to be termed dead.
