England’s slip fielders James Vince and Joe Root showed what the definition of proper teamwork meant when they collaborated to complete a good catch in the slips during the first innings of the 2nd Test at Chester le Street against Sri Lanka.
England went into the match having won the first Test with a handsome margin of an innings. Coming into the second Test, they put on a mammoth 498/9 decl after batting first. The Sri Lankan batting order, that has been struggling in the overcast conditions, were found wanting for runs again as English bowlers ripped apart the Sri Lankan batting.

Sri Lanka were stuttering at 90/7 in the last session of day 2 when Vince and Root showed a superb fielding effort. Stuart Broad bowled a delivery outside off and the batsman Shaminda Eranga poked his bat at it, resulting in a flying edge. The ball quickly flew in the direction of the third slip fielder, James Vince, and he jumped high to get a left hand on the ball. The flying dive from Vince slowed down the pace on the ball and looped it further in the air.
Joe Root showed great presence of mind and quickly put in a diving effort to hold on to the catch and completed a magnificent effort on the field. Well, the commentators had their say as they quoted ‘that was Joe Root who took the catch, but it was James Vince who did all the hard work’. Eranga was dismissed on 2 as Sri Lanka reeled at 90/8.
