Watch: John Bracewell is bowled by Simon O'Donnell in an unusual manner

An ODI in March 1990 between New Zealand witnessed a strange dismissal. Simon O’Donnell, the talented former Australian all-rounder was a regular member of the country’s ODI team from the mid-eighties until the first couple of years of the nineties. His was a powerful striker of the ball and played a key role in the batting lineup. His intelligent fast-medium bowling often proved vital in the team’s one-day fortunes. He finished the 1987 World Cup, which the Aussies won, as his team’s most economical bowler.

In the 3rd Match of the Rothmans Cup Triangular Series in New Zealand, which also featured India, O’Donnell had a field day with the ball against the home team. After contributing 20 with the bat in Australia’s innings, he bowled brilliant taking a five-for and helped his easily defend a score of 244 against the Kiwis. His 4th wicket though was a complete comedy of errors.

John Bracewell received a slower ball from O’Donnell took ages to reach him being high above his eye line. Bracewell was completely deceived and thinking the ball is going to hit him, ducked under it which completely exposed his leg stump. The ball that appeared to be a beamer upon release dipped in and banged into the leg stump on offer. Bracewell stood stunned for a few moments upon hearing the dreaded sound of the timber. O’Donnell himself seemed surprised at the mode of dismissal and couldn’t stop himself from laughing. He finished the match with figures of 5/13 from 6 overs as played a major role in bundling out the home side for just 94 runs.
