Watch: Marlon Samuels salutes Ben Stokes, to give the best sendoff: West Indies all-rounder Marlon Samuels took sledging and on field altercations to a new level when he stood in military style and saluted England batsman Ben Stokes when the former was dismissed on the third day of the second test between West Indies and England.
The two have been enjoying this exchange of gestures and words since the first day of the second test match. And when Stokes was dismissed on a Devendra Bishoo delivery for 8 runs in the first innings Samuels stood at his way towards the pavilion and in attention saluted the batsman while he walked off not able to digest what the West Indian was up to.
While there have been mixed reactions about it, with some calling it the best send off, worst sledging to a good gesture, positive banter, West Indies bowling coach Curtly Ambrose thinks there was nothing wrong in what his player did.
Ambrose said, “There is nothing wrong with a bit of banter, it is international cricket, but we always tell them to keep it clean and don’t go over the top.
“I don’t think Marlon meant anything by it and of course he enjoys himself on the field. Cricket is hard and you must find a way to relax yourself and have fun.”
Former England skipper Michael Vaughan said, “I think that’s the greatest thing I’ve seen in Test cricket for a long time. I hope he doesn’t get any kind of fine. I thought that was brilliant banter.”
Former England spinner Graeme Swann tweeted
‘Heavy money on @benstokes38 getting Marlon out in the 2nd dig. Eng should line up a guard of honour for him. Love to see humour on the field.’
Swann said, “He can be an absolute tool sometimes but I have to admit Marlon Samuels just made me laugh tea out of my nose with his saluting send off,”
