Martin Guptill has been batting like immortal in the limited overs games these days. In the second T20I versus Sri Lanka, the hosts were asked to chase 143 to win. On a flat batting track, the target looked easy and Guptill had no second thoughts about attacking upfront from ball one. He was on a rampage and talked only in sixes and fours. It did take very long for him to reach his half-century which he did in just 19 balls, beating his own New Zealand record by four deliveries.
By the end of 4 overs, he took the Black Caps past the 50-run mark and an over later, reached his personal milestone. In all, his innings included 6 boundaries and 5 hits sailing over the rope. Guptill operated at a staggering strike rate of 252.
He had to eventually depart after Thisara Perera got him caught behind on 63 from 25 balls. There was a small crowd, mostly comprising of the Sri Lankan fans who would have not regretted the loss after being treated with such thunderous display of batting.
But, there was another storm waiting to come as Guptill’s record was broken inside half-hour by his teammate Colin Munro who made Guptill’s onslaught look slow in front his 14 balls fifty. He continued the assault in a more brutish manner and finished off from where Martin Guptill had left. Munro’s fifty is the second fastest globally, just behind Yuvraj Singh.
