New Zealand opener Martin Guptill has gone bonkers with the willow, smashing 93 from 30 balls and nearly breaking the world record for the fastest one-day international fifty. Chasing Sri Lanka’s measly total of 117, Guptill was in no mood to muck around, belting nine fours and eight sixes – a boundary every 1.76 balls – to help New Zealand successfully chase the target in the ninth over with a whopping 250 balls to spare.
Guptill raced to 46 from 13 balls and had AB de Villiers’ record of 16 balls for a half-century in his sights, but was unable to get away a couple of excellent yorkers from pace bowler Nuwan Kulasekara. While Guptill was basking in the glory of one of the most destructive knocks in recent memory, spare a thought for Sri Lanka leg-spinner Jeffrey Vandersay. He was thrown the ball on debut with the score at 0/71 off five overs and his first six balls in one-dayers went for: 4, 6, 6, 4, 0, 6.
Guptill said he had no idea he was close to De Villiers’ record before umpire Richard Illingworth mentioned it.
“Richard Illingworth said something like I was getting close with a couple of balls to go and then I got a couple of yorkers in there,” Guptill said in a televised interview.
“I am pretty happy with the way things are going (but) I’ll take a 90 not out and the win rather than the fastest 50 and getting out.”
New Zealand have now taken a vital 2-0 lead over Sri Lanka. all thanks to some phenomenal stuff on the field.
