Team India started day 2 at 239/7 with wicketkeeper-batsman Wriddhiman Saha (14) and allrounder Ravindra Jadeja (0) on the crease. The partnership was the last pair with a reliable batsman at each end. But it didn’t last long as Jadeja was dismissed for 14.

Saha stood his ground and had the bowlers for company. Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s stay was a brief one as well and he returned back after facing 11 balls for his 5 runs. They were 9 wickets down and the score board read 281.

The Indian wicketkeeper played some brilliant strokes in the morning and accelerated the total towards 300, which almost stood as the mark of psychological advantage. Mohammad Shami was the last man in and held his nerves for 14 deliveries, he hit three boundaries scoring 14 runs but on the 5th ball of the 104th over a bouncer from New Zealand pacer Trent Boult he hooked it but wasn’t convincing enough.

There was a fielder there, the Black Caps skipper Ross Taylor had protection at the long leg boundary in the form of Matt Henry who had to run to his right for a few yards to get to the ball and put in a dive to grab it. When he finished the catch it was well a spectacular one and the bowler Boult was amazed as well. Shami couldn’t believe the catch was completed but Henry took it clean to wrap the Indian innings up. They ended at 316 as Saha was unbeaten at his end having scored 54 runs with the help of 7 fours and a couple of sixes.

New Zealand once again had a poor start with the bat as Tom Latham was trapped right in front by Mohammad Shami, Martin Guptill’s poor run of form continued and he was clean bowled by Bhuvneshwar Kumar. The Indian bowlers especially the pacers dominated the day; they had the Kiwis on the floor at 128 for 7 when the day was called off due to poor weather conditions.
