Watch: Misbah-ul-Haq celebrates his Lord’s ton with pushups
The first of the four Tests between Pakistan and hosts England started today at the Lord’s Cricket Ground in London. Visiting skipper Misbah-ul-haq won the toss and decided to bat first. A few things along with the Pakistan top order supported his decision, one England were without James Anderson, two there was no visible green tinge and the ball wouldn’t swing around as much. It proved to be the right one after Mohammad Hafiz and Shan Masood gave them a stable start.
Though Masood departed on the score of 7 he almost played out the first hour of the day with Hafeez. The opener also got out playing a lose shot on the score of 40 and was Chris Woakes’ second wicket. Azhar Ali had a brief stay in the middle for 7 runs and in walked Misbah to join veteran partner Younis Khan. The oldest Test pair at the moment took the score over 100 and when things looked really stable for Pakistan Younis walked down the wicket and handed over a catch to Moeen Ali to give Stuart Braod his first wicket.
The skipper firmly held his guard and stitched a rebuilding and assuring partnership with Asad Shafiq. He was soon moving towards his 9th Test hundred. Shafiq got to his half-century and Misbah was inching closer to the historic mark. On the 3rd ball of the 79th over as he pushed a back of the length delivery from James Vince towards third-man to compete his century. He is now among the elite list of batsmen who have scored a ton at the Mecca of cricket in the very first outing. With that, he also became the oldest captain to score a Test ton at 42 years and 47 days.
No doubt he is the eldest member of the team but is also the fittest. He wanted to pass a message to his boys standing and rooting in the Lord’s balcony and to the world that age isn’t a determining factor and someone as determined as him could achieve the unthinkable. Misbah took it forward and did 10 pushups as a part of his century celebration.
