The first of the three-match ODI series between New Zealand and Pakistan ended in a heart break for Kiwi fast bowler Mitchell McClenaghan. The left arm quickie was struck on the left eye by a rising delivery from Pakistani pacer Anwar Ali. In spite of winning the first of three ODI’s, the series has presumably ended for McClenaghan.
Finding themselves on unfamiliar terms at 99-6, Matt Santner (48), Matt Henry (48*) and McCleneghan(31*) ensured that the Kiwis reached a competitive total of 280. Having played the better of 44 overs, McCleneghan’s blistering innings of 31 (3 fours and 2 sixes) came to an abrupt halt.
A rising delivery from Anwar Ali saw the ball evade through the grill, thus striking McCleneghan straight in the eye. The Kiwi pacer, attempting to play the pull, missed the ball completely. Although McCleneghan made it back to his feet, the severe bruising in his left eye was quite distinctive.
McCleneghan failed to make an appearance while his side bowled as he was rushed off to a nearby hospital for medical attention. However, in spite of the absence of their premier quick bowler, the New Zealand attack made short work of the Pakistani batting order, bowling them out for 210. Grant Elliot and Trent Boult struck with three and four wickets respectively as Babr Azam’s fighting knock of 62 went in vain.
Whether McCleneghan is available for the next two ODI’s remains to be seen.
