A wide is a part and parcel of the game, however, huge ones usually stand out and the biggest wides in cricket prove to be amusing; not for the bowler, though! Here we see two big fast bowlers in action in an ODI as well as a Test match. Morne Morel and Steve Harmison test their limits of bowling the biggest wides!
The great commentator David Lloyd’s expression “oh my goodness me”, sums the ball bowled by the tall South African Morne Morkel. Against England in a T20I at Edgbaston he bowled an absolute shocker down the leg side in the first over of the match.
The ball landed on the adjacent pitch instead of the one being played on and went for a four, much to the delight of a huge crowd and to the astonishment of ‘Bumble’ and his companion Michael Atherton in the commentary box. Charging in, to bowl with intent, Morkel loses his radar and sent down a massive wide.
‘Athers’ reckons this isn’t the first time something like this has been witnessed in cricket. The first Test of the Ashes series at the Gabba in Brisbane began with yet another blunder. It was England’s Ashes hero, Steve Harmison, who bowled a ball wide enough to go to the slips instead of the keeper!
Harmison though took it in good spirit and laughed that wide off whereas Morkel was a bit embarrassed and tried to roll his arm over looking down. There is obviously no place to hide after bowling such bizarre deliveries. These two moments stand out as the unexpected ones from the celebrated careers of the two big fast bowlers.
