Phillip Hughes was always considered a player worth the class and technique to bat it out and make records. But, this innings that he played for Australia A against South Africa A at Darwin was special. It was weeks after he had suffered one of the biggest blows in his life, losing his grandfather. Hughes went back home in midst of the quadrangular series, completed the last rights and was back to hit this record making innings. With 202 from 151 balls Hughes became the first Australian cricketer to hit a list A double ton.
The 25 years old coming out of tough times did admit that, “It was a tough week definitely. I can definitely dedicate this to my Pop and to my family back home, especially my Dad. Hughes was quoted by cricket.com.au.
“To come back after being away for a week and to get 200 for the first in this format of the game, it’s amazing feeling and it’s a day I will never forget.’ said the batsman, soon after creating this record.
The inning was different from what we usually see of Hughes, he was in with intent and to an extent even luck favored him, the balls that took either the edge or flew off a miss hit landed either away from the fielders or were dropped. And he made the most of it by first getting to his fifty and carried on from there to record yet another list A hundred for himself.
Hughes did not stop there; he carried on the momentum and batted with more confidence and conviction. Sixes and fours were flowing out of his bat and more often than not the runs he scored were off boundaries. He played a huge variety of shots, the cuts, the drives, hooks, pulls, leg glance, lofted drives. The most beautiful among those can be the lofted sixes that he placed not only off the spinners; the faster bowlers weren’t spared either.
With this innings he not only gave Australia A a good game but also encrypted his name in the records book by becoming the first ever Australian cricketer to hit a list A hundred. Though today Phil Hughes is not among st us, the saddest thing that could happen; the worst nightmare of a cricket fan came true and he died of an injury he sustained during a match. But, with this and so many other innings that he has played Phil Hughes will remain in every cricket fans thoughts forever.
