Watch: Rahat Ali gives early jolts to England’s chase
England seems to have done no homework to counter the less-talked about left arm fast bowler Rahat Ali. Ali was the surprise wrecker for Pakistan as he created ripples in the English batting order to give his team the upper hand in the 1st Test at Lord’s.
Pakistan were bundled out for 215 in early in the morning session, giving the hosts a pretty achievable challenging of 284 to win. Alastair Cook kicked off the chase with a superb boundary off Mohammad Amir in the first over.
The openers looked to be batting with a slightly aggressive approach. But, Pakistan did not have to wait long for their first success as Rahat got rid of the skipper with the first ball of his second over. A visibly disappointed Cook walked off with just 8 runs to his name after giving an edge to wicketkeeper Sarfraz Ahmed.
Four overs later, Rahat sent back the other opener, Alex Hales, to reduce the home team to 32 for 2. The right-hander looked attempted to cut a delivery only to give away an edge to Mohammad Hafeez in first slip. Hafeez did not mess up like he did in the first innings and safely pouched it as Hales departed for just 16.
His wonderful opening spell wasn’t over yet as he pocketed the most important wicket in the English line-up later. Joe Root, just like his skipper, started off things with a beautifully-timed drive through the covers. Unfortunately, his stay in the middle lasted only 11 deliveries as Rahat picked up his third scalp to leave England in a bothersome state of 47/3.
