Watch: Sachin Tendulkar out to an unplayable ball from Curtly Ambrose
The Benson & Hedges World Cup in Australia pitted the mighty West Indies against India at Wellington on 10th of March 1992. The picturesque Basin Reserve ground witnessed an eagerly awaited contest between the then upcoming star of Indian cricket, Sachin Tendulkar and the most lethal fast bowler in world cricket, the mighty Curtly Ambrose.
Known for his pace and accuracy, Ambrose has troubled many a great batsmen of his generation and must have relished bowling to the little master who was back then making headlines in world cricket.
Sachin was in good form in the Test series prior to the World Cup against the home side Australia. He scored runs against the likes of Craig McDermott and Merv Hughes making two centuries in the series which made everyone take notice of his class and technical ability on the fast, bouncy surfaces down under.
The man he was about to face though in the World Cup was a different kettle of fish altogether. Ambrose was a master at working out a batsman and producing deliveries they would hate facing. A smooth run-up, a high arm action along with his 6ft 7ins frame generated the kind of bounce which makes life difficult for batsmen.
Sachin batting on 4 off 10 received a length delivery which took off and moved ever so slightly to open him up completely. It was a dream ball from the great fast bowler which the master had no answer to. He nicked to wicketkeeper David Williams who took an easy catch. India was bundled out for 197 and the Windies went on to win the match by 5 wickets.
Ambrose’s spell read 10-1-24-2 and although Anderson Cummins took the man-of-the-match award for his 4 wicket haul, it was the great Antiguan who posed problems for all top order Indian batsman.
