Watch: Shane Warne laughs ridiculously at Paul Adams: Paul Adams was very unusual. His bowling action was very bizarre and odd. He and his unique bowling action was described as “ Frog in the blender.”
His action might have caught most of the batsmen by surprise. But, Paul Adams got himself tangled when he met the “King of Spin” Shane Warne. Be it his bowling or his personality, Shane Warne was very deceptive in nature. It was only on very rare occasions that anybody could outwit him completely.
The occasion was the 2nd innings of the 2nd Test at Port Elizabeth in 1997. South Africa were completely down at the score of 167/9. Paul Adams was their last batsman in. Mark Taylor with an intention of not wasting any more time had employed Shane Warne from one end. Warne was bowling the 74th over of the innings and the batsman facing him on the other side was Adams.
He survived the first ball carefully. The second ball, a top spinner smartly sent down by Warne hits Adams’ on his front foot. Warne and his teammates erupt and appeal for a leg before dismissal. However, the umpire turns down Warne’s appeal. Adams reacts and starts murmuring something. Warne was very sure about the appeal and looked in disbelief.
A bit upset looking Warne goes back and walks in to deliver the next ball. It’s a normal leg break. Paul Adams, however, unexpectedly tries to reverse sweep it. But, he was nowhere close to hitting the ball appropriately and eventually gifted a catch to Mark Taylor at slip.
It was already a slightly embarrassing way of getting out but Warne was ready to rub more salt to the wound. He immediately burst into a derisive laugh as soon as Adams got caught behind. The incident appeared funny but South Africa Coach Bob Woolmer was not as amused like Warne was. “That was a little disappointing; there was no need to mock him,” he said after the incident. The match itself was very low scoring yet interesting contest between both the teams which Australia won by two wickets in the end.
